When we first opened our staffing business in 1989, I helped place a chef in one of our sales positions, and he CRUSHED it. His name was Ron. Ron needed a job quickly, and we did not have any culinary/ chef jobs when he applied.
I learned from that instance, never underestimate the power of a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn.
Ron came to us looking for a job as a fine dining chef. While we didn’t have many chef positions to offer Ron at the time. Ron was very determined to work.
He didn’t let our lack of chef jobs for him stop him; instead, he said, “I can do sales” if it will help you out
That attitude set him apart from the beginning.
Ron wasn’t a trained salesperson, but his ability to connect with people, his humor, and his work ethic helped him succeed in sales just as much as his culinary skills helped him in the kitchen.
Over the years, Ron became one of our top salespeople, earning far more in sales than he ever did as a chef.
The lesson here? It’s not always about what’s on paper. A resume or job title doesn’t define a person’s potential. Sometimes, the best talent is hidden beneath the surface, and you only discover it when you give someone a chance.
Hiring any person is making an investment in their future. And just like any investment, you need to take time to understand the person behind the resume.

Skills can be taught, but drive, determination, and a willingness to learn are the real differentiators.
Ron’s story is a reminder that sometimes, the best hires don’t fit into a neat box. They’re the people willing to step outside their comfort zone and take on new challenges. And when you find someone like that, don’t hesitate to invest in them.
