First the good news, your clients workers compensation rates are going up. Now the bad news, workers compensation rates are increasing faster for staffing companies, and most insurance companies are less eager to underwrite staffing policies than they were in 2013.
Many of the staffing owners I speak with each week, tell me that they feel they are in a workers compensation vice that is driving them “insane.” For example, even if they can get a direct /private policy, rates are still high, deposits are large and increasing, and they awake each day feeling they are one accident away from getting terminated by their carrier.
Here is a good article with helpful suggestions to deal with the “workers compensation insanity” you may be feeling.

The article suggests that you use best practices for managing your workers compensation in order to decrease your “insane feelings.” You should consider:
a) doing thorough due diligence when hiring employees.
b) conducting comprehensive training programs,
c) making sure that injured workers return to work as soon as possible, and
d) maintaining great communication with the injured workers at all times.
In this challenging environment you need to consider all the various work comp options to keep their rates low. For example, many owners in the last 24 months have found Professional Employer Organizations to be great partners that will reduce the stress and insanity of workers compensation.

By Effectively Using Light Duty Assignments With Your Injured Employees
When I owned my own multi state, 25K+ employee staffing company for 16 years, I often had discussions with my Professional Employer Organization (PEO) workers compensation risk management specialist about how I could control my workers compensation insurance costs. My PEO representative would remind me that the easiest and most direct way to lower my premiums, was to make sure that an injured worker is offered light duty assignments as soon as they get the green light from the medical doctor treating their injury.
Best Practices for using Light Duty Assignments
I followed that advice and always maintained a very low mod. Below is a GREAT article about best practices for using Light Duty effectively.

After you have had a chance to review this article, let’s talk about other ways to reduce your workers compensation insurance and back office costs by partnering with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO.)

One of my clients recently mentioned that his workers compensation rates were significantly increasing because of an employee that experienced a major job related accident while texting on a staffing assignment.
Given that nearly everyone has a cell phone these days, I wondered how many of my clients had a specific policy about cell phone usage while on the temporary assignment?
I asked 15 of my clients and found out only a few had included any information in their employee orientation packages or really emphasized this issue with their staff.
Below is a link to an article that may help you formulate a company policy about cell phone usage on the job; and how best to communicate best safety practices to your temporary employee staff.

With workers compensation becoming more expensive and more difficult to secure and maintain, ALL staffing company owners need to work with their employees to create the safest working environment. By staying current with on the job safety guidelines, you will protect your employees and keep your comp rates as low as possible. .

As more and more staffing companies use a PEO to reduce their soaring workers compensation insurance rates, it is important that they thoroughly review the PEO’s credentials with an experienced staffing PEO broker.
Here are some simple guidelines to follow with your staffing-PEO broker.
- Make sure the PEO is reputable and a legally insured PEO.
- Confirm the authenticity of the PEO’s certificate of insurance.
- Find out what services the PEO will offer. Meet the people who provide the services.
- Check the company’s references. Make sure they are paying payroll taxes.
- Determine if the company is a member of the National Association of
Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO.)
- How does the PEO cover ACA benefits? Is it licensed in particular states? – Are they self insured? – Who is their carrier?
- Review your liability in the service agreement.
Work Comp Staffing Solutions specializes in PEO’s that work with staffing companies. This is a rarity these days– especially PEO’s willing to underwrite light industrial codes. Work Comp Staffing Solutions vets and screens all its’ PEO partners using these guidelines. As a result, we work with very reputable and experienced PEO’s that can easily pass the strictest due diligence process.
