What is an Administrative Service Organization or ASO, and why an ASO may be right for your staffing company?

Sometimes staffing companies can only get workers compensation through the State Funds. Both private carriers and Professional Employer Organizations (PEO’s) may not be willing to provide workers compensation coverage. But the staffing company still wants all the great human resources and payroll management services that PEO’s provide like:

  1. Payroll and workers compensation administration and management
  2. Payroll tax filings and W-2’s
  3. Health care benefit administration including the new Affordable Care Act.
  4. Human Resource functions.

The Administrative Service Organization will perform all these functions for the staffing company. The employees are 100% the staffing companies, and there is not a “co employment relationship” with the employees like with a PEO. ASO’s have been around for the last 20 years as the complexity of managing employees for staffing companies has grown exponentially.

Affordable Care Act — What’s Your Game Plan?

Today there are many staffing experts offering options about how to minimize your cost exposure under the ACA.

Most of these experts  agree that after January 1, 2013, the US labor market, and in particular the staffing industry will be very different.  Maybe good and maybe not so.

I receive many calls every day from successful staffing owners who are researching options about how to best integrate this new law and cost structure into their business model. They are considering new business models for themselves in order to stay profitable.   One option that many staffing companies are looking at is utilizing a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) as an inexpensive way to comply with these new laws AND reduce their workers compensation costs.

Please feel free to contact me at 202-302-1212 to discuss how PEO’s can help your staffing business manage under this new ACA law. For  more information about ACA please visit us at www.StaffingCompSolutions.com

Work Comp Staffing Solutions Helped 6 More Staffing Companies in March Partner With PEO’s

March was a very busy month for Work Comp Staffing Solutions. We helped 6  diverse staffing companies partner with Professional Employer Organizations (PEO’s.)

Success #1.    2M staffing company in Maryland had been cancelled by their current carrier and needed workers compensation insurance to service their current clients, and 1M in immediate new business. All their codes were light industrial with a focus on mail room positions; and they had a 1.6 mod!

Success #2.  New staffing company in California. This company places medical professionals all through Northern California  and could not wait the 6 month’s that it usually takes for the California  State Fund to process their paperwork. We found them a PEO to partner within a week, as well as payroll funding company, so they were ready to do business.

Success #3.  Florida based medical staffing company  that places occupational  and physical therapists  in permanent positions for 12 years and was driven by client demand to expand into temporary and contract staffing throughout the United States. We also found a staffing funding company (with very low rates) to finance their A/R expansion.

Success #4.  Georgia IT staffing company using the State Fund found it less expensive to utilize a PEO that offered a more extensive menu of health care benefits to its employees, and could service their growth into other states.

Success  #5.  New start -up staffing company in Tennessee that focuses on light industrial positions. The owners said they selected a Work Comp Staffing Solutions PEO solution because of the value added staffing consulting service that Work Comp Staffing Solutions uniquely offers its clients.

Success # 6. White collar staffing company had unexpectedly been dropped by Travelers after 6 years even though they had  a clean loss comp record. We found them a PEO solution in 48 hours which allowed them seamless work comp coverage

Please visit us at  www.StaffingCompSolutions.com  or contact us today at 202-302-1212  to discuss your workers compensation challenges, and to see if you qualify for the benefits of partnering with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO.)

We will also begin hosting monthly webinars about PEO’s  and other workers compensation solutions starting in May.

Reduce Your Workers Compensation Insurance Costs by Effectively Using Light Duty Assignments With Your Injured Employees.

When I owned my own multi state, 15K+  employee staffing company for 16 years, I often had discussions with my Professional Employer Organization (PEO)  workers compensation risk management specialist about how I could control my workers compensation insurance costs. My PEO representative would remind me that the easiest  and most direct way to lower my premiums, was to make sure that an injured worker  is offered light duty assignments as soon as they get the green light from the medical doctor treating their injury.

I followed that advice and always maintained a very low mod.  Below is a GREAT article about best practices for using Light Duty effectively.

After you have had a chance to review this article, let’s talk about other ways to reduce your workers compensation insurance and back office costs by partnering with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO)

Remember, just like you are for your clients,  I am available 7 days a week to help my clients address  their staffing business concerns.  Please feel free to contact me at 202-302-1212 and visit our web site at www.StaffingCompSolutions.com

21M Reasons Why One Company Should Have Used a Professional Employer Organization

While it is hard to generalize from one legal case, this one may help you to understand why partnering with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) can save you time and money.

A Customer Service representative sued her employer after she was fired for having anxiety attacks which forced her to take time away from the job.  The employee was fired after taking a few days off without telling the employer.  She was subsequently awarded 16M because the (California) court felt she earned this amount in damages (please do not ask me to explain this amount) Actually she was awarded only 5.1M, but the court added treble damages so the total was  21M. See this case/link below

http://www.swrnn.com/2013/02/15/los-angeles-woman-fired-for-having-panic-attacks-awarded-21-7-million/

The take away from this story is two fold. First  California can be a very expensive state to employ people, Second, employing people these days without  the use of a human resource specialist like a PEO is inviting trouble.

Had the employer been using a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) they may not have made this personnel mistake, and more importantly, certainly would have had a qualified human resource/ legal partner to help deal with the aftermath of this management decision.

Please feel free to contact Work Comp Staffing Solutions at 202-302-1212 to discuss your PEO needs and how you can get a worker’s compensation quote. Also visit us at www.StaffingCompSolutions.com to learn more about PEO’s and other workers compensation insurance solutions.

Feeling the HEAT in February

Last weeks blog generated ALOT of feedback from staffing owners who could relate to the additional pressure or “HEAT” they feel these days about workers compensation insurance.  One of the staffing owners said, “Everyday I feel like  I am one accident away from losing my business.”

During the first 2 months of 2013 we helped many staffing companies with their workers compensation insurance challenges. Here are two examples of the staffing companies we helped in February:

  1. A 10M  light industrial day labor staffing company that needed to generate the payroll themselves- and was turned away by nearly every carrier.  So we found a  PEO solution  that allowed them to generate their own payroll  and  included lowering their deductible from 250K to 50K.
  2. A start up medical staffing medical company that needed workers compensation insurance coverage in 10 states and could not afford hefty deposits as a new company. Their solution included  a guaranteed cost program using PEO with Zurich insurance

Please contact us today at 202-302-1212 or visit us at www.StaffingCompSolutions.com and we would be glad to share more success stories with you. Most importantly, we will help you solve your workers compensation insurance challenges.
