As more and more staffing companies use a PEO to reduce their soaring workers compensation insurance rates, it is important that they thoroughly review the PEO’s credentials with an experienced staffing PEO broker.
Here are some simple guidelines to follow with your staffing-PEO broker.
- Make sure the PEO is reputable and a legally insured PEO.
- Confirm the authenticity of the PEO’s certificate of insurance.
- Find out what services the PEO will offer. Meet the people who provide the services.
- Check the company’s references. Make sure they are paying payroll taxes.
- Determine if the company is a member of the National Association of
Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO.)
- How does the PEO cover ACA benefits? Is it licensed in particular states? – Are they self insured? – Who is their carrier?
- Review your liability in the service agreement.
Work Comp Staffing Solutions specializes in PEO’s that work with staffing companies. This is a rarity these days– especially PEO’s willing to underwrite light industrial codes. Work Comp Staffing Solutions vets and screens all its’ PEO partners using these guidelines. As a result, we work with very reputable and experienced PEO’s that can easily pass the strictest due diligence process. Many staffing companies that are in the assigned risk or state workers compensation pools are finding that their 2014 premiums are making business much less profitable. They are searching for solutions and new business models so they can still eek out a profit this year, or even stay in business. Especially, since the governmental regulations for the new health care law (ACA) may significantly add to staffing companies administration costs.
I speak to dozens of frustrated staffing company owners each month about these issues. An increasing popular solution to decrease workers compensation costs and address the ACA liabilities, is using a Professional Employer Organization (PEO.)
Please feel free to contact me at davidstaffing@gmail.com or www.StaffingCompSolutions.com to obtain a quote to determine if partnering with a Professional Employer Organization can save you money in your workers compensation and administrative areas.
I used a PEO in my staffing company for many years and it saved thousands of dollars each year.
I look forward to saving you money in 2014.

Many of my staffing clients are frustrated when they tell me that THEIR clients do not feel responsible when a temporary employee gets hurt at their location. But according to very specific guidelines from OSHA, THEIR client certainly bares some of the responsibility in this situation. This is a fact that is unfortunately lost on many of their clients. As a result, some staffing client companies do not always make sure that the temporary workers perform their jobs in a safe environment.
Here is great page of information from the OSHA web site that explains your clients responsibilities when they utilize your temporary staffing service. This information may be very useful to include in your client orientation material.

Dependable Business Solutions, a Work Comp Staffing Solutions client, talks about their PEO relationship.
“We use a Professional Employer Organization (PEO ) for all of our back office needs, at first we only thought of our PEO as a great payroll and workers comp processer, but as we needed more things for government contracting we have added so much more. We now have all of our business insurance with our PEO from workers comp, general liability, professional liability, auto, crime and performance bonding. We always go to our PEO first for anything that we need for any contract and we have found that not only do our PEO offer the services but they have been 20 to 30% lower in price. The level of service and the low cost is unmatched in the industry. Our PEO has a group of professionals that are always ready to help and usually can get me answers within a few hours. I can get quotes on deals that I’m trying to make with clients that are very competitive and protect us to the maximum. We now have all of our business insurances, back ground screening, drug screening, employee hand books and benefits with our PEO.
All does things have helped us to maintain a strong and competitive stand in our industry nationwide but to tell you the truth the most important thing that we like about using a PEO is that they became duel employer with us and took the responsibility of making sure that we are always in compliance with the current and changing employment laws. Finally, NO MORE WORKERS COMP AUDITS or down payments every year.
The only thing I wish I would have done differently is that I would have joined them 17 years ago when we first opened our doors.”

Affordable Care Act – Options for Outsourcing Compliance
Last week Staffing Industry Analysts researcher , Andrew Braswell wrote an excellent article about different strategies that are available to staffing companies for dealing with the increased administrative complexities of Obamacare. One of the solutions SIA mentioned is employing a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) to assist in handling the additional administrative responsibilities that all employers must now be responsible for. Staffing Industry Analysts, in their research for this article, identified Work Comp Staffing Solutions as one of two “best brokers” for staffing companies to turn to when selecting a PEO.
We are humbled that Staffing Industry Analysts research has confirmed what our clients have been saying for many years.

“Worker’s compensation solutions for staffing companies”
This past year Work Comp Staffing Solutions has been able to help more staffing companies find workers compensation solutions than ever before. In total, we assisted 15 staffing companies with their workers compensation challenges. Even with the ever hardening workers compensation market, Work Comp Staffing Solutions clients were able to identify and manage the most economical workers compensation programs.
Here are some examples of the new staffing clients we helped in 2013:
- 2M Maryland staffing company did not have workers compensation for a few months because they could not afford the States increased premiums. We found them a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) solution where there was not a down payment, and all premiums were “pay as you go.”
- 8M Carolina day labor staffing company with a challenging work compensation loss history needed coverage quickly or their State Pool premiums may have forced them out of business. Work Comp Staffing Solutions found a workers compensation program with attractive premiums and an affordable deductible plan.
- 9M Arizona staffing company needed to find a workers compensation program in 72 hours when they contacted Work Comp Staffing Solutions. We found a PEO that did not require a down payment or deposit, and allowed them to stay in business. Work Comp Staffing Solutions also served as business consultants to this company in 2013 increasing their gross margins by 30% and lowering internal costs.
- 6 new staffing start ups located in throughout the United States. These staffing start ups are now employing hundreds of workers contributing to our growing economy.
- 1M Massachusetts Information Technology company that needed workers compensation coverage in all states.
In total, Work Comp Staffing Solutions assisted 15 new staffing clients this year which brings our client base to 52. We are humbled that our clients have entrusted this critical part of their business to our company. We thank them and wish them and all our friends in the staffing industry, a very happy and safe Holiday Season.
